Pet shops! Not the boys, the place that sells pets. Let's talk about what you need to know in order to make an informed choice before shopping at one!

Episode 6: What does shelter/rescue mean?

Today I'm talking shelter/rescue. What do those terms even mean? How many are there? Who runs them? Plus, some lesser known places to adopt a dog. All your questions answered!

Episode 4: Family dogs + Cuddly Bassets

Today I chat with Jenny, a California mom who wants to know if it's the right time to add a dog to the family.

Here is the research I mention that tells us moms are the primary caregivers for pets. Did you know that pets live most frequently in homes with children? 64.1% of homes with children under age 6, and 74.8% of homes with children over age 6, have pets.

Want to learn more about how to help kids and dogs live happily and safely together? Kids And Dogs Interactive Education has developed print-ready materials for use in teaching children and adults about dog safety. Read them here

Lastly I talk about foster care, which can be a great option for some people because you get fluffy cuddles without the long-term commitment! Read what Best Friends Animal Society has to say about fostering here. Check the website for your favorite local animal shelter or pet rescue to find out about fostering in your area.

Today we went "inside baseball" so I could explain some potentially confusing terms I used on the last episode.

We talked nosework again! I also forgot the third scent we used during practice (clove!). Learn more about nosework from the real experts at the National Association of Canine Scent Work. You can even find a trainer in your area!

Episode 2: 3 Must Haves When Starting Your Puppy Search

Today we go back to the beginning. I tell you my top 3 must haves for anyone starting a dog search!

Producer Trey told us about where he got his dog, Jackal. (PSA: Don't be like Trey's neighbor and have a surprise litter of 15 puppies! Read what the American Veterinary Medical Association says about pet spay and neuter.)

Wondering about the Sarah McLaughlan ad I mentioned? Here it is! The ASPCA received more than 30 million dollars in donations because of that ad. Wow! Something to think about when we decide where to direct our donation dollars for helping animals.

I talked about a family who wanted to adopt a Golden Retriever. Interested in this breed? Start with this national list of rescue organizations and the national breed club

Last, but not, least, I shared a few stories about my pal, Nora. If you're interested in nosework, check out the National Association of Canine Scent Work

Now I really should go and fix that screen....
